Top 5 Decluttering Tips
You know decluttering is good for you, but not sure how to do it? Here are my top 5 decluttering tips to help you nail it.
The process of decluttering our homes and lives is hard, requiring discipline and a large investment of our scarcest resource, time. Following these 5 decluttering tips will ensure that your efforts are not wasted.
-
Start small but do it often: Getting started is often the hardest thing, start small so you don’t get overwhelmed too quickly. A good starting point could be one category of things (Jeans, T-shirts) or a small area like a drawer or a handbag. As you gain momentum, you’ll build more energy to tackle bigger projects. Start with a regular session of say an hour a week.
-
Identify the cause of your clutter: Why is your clutter building? What is it that you do or don’t do that leads to it building up? You can only make long term change if you stop to think of all of the emotional triggers or behaviours that result in clutter. Write these down and commit to no longer doing them.
-
Categorise: You can only fully assess what you need or love by looking at all of the items you have in one category. These things may be scattered around your home, so first of all you need to bring them together.
-
Unclutter: Now you’ve got the whole of your category together challenge yourself to remove as much as possible keeping only the things you really need or love. As a start remove unused items, duplicates, broken things or dead things. Then review again, are you really going to use all of what you have left? Try and make a secondary cull if possible. If you still can’t decide, ask yourself how much you’d pay to go and buy the item again, if the answer is nothing then it has no value to you.
-
Give it a home: Now you have your much-reduced category of things, work out the most logical spot for this category to live in your home. Putting structure around the item, for example a container or a divider or a carousel can keep the category contained and stop it from getting messy. Finally add a label so that everyone knows where its new home is and tell everyone in your home so they know where to find it and where to put things back to.
Following these top 5 decluttering tips will ensure you success in your decluttering projects……..one last thing though…..don’t forget to remove the items you declutter straight away……many people fail at this and the clutter just ends up sitting in a garage or another room……that means it’s still clutter!
Do you really want to get this done but just don’t have the time or headspace? Don't worry we can do this for you and you’ll be loving your decluttered and organised home in no time.
